5 Types of Calgary Mechanics To Avoid
So your car isn’t working properly and now you’ve got to find a mechanic. In a perfect world this would be easy, all mechanics would be equally fair and efficient and you’d have your car back in working order, resting easy in the knowledge of a job well done. However, you don’t need me to tell you that the world is far from perfect, and the world of mechanics is, perhaps, less so. That’s not to say it isn’t possible to find a good mechanic, only that there are a few types of mechanics to avoid.
To help you get your vehicle repaired as quickly as possible, and to save you from regretting your decision, here is a list of five types of mechanics to avoid.
#1 - The dishonest mechanic. Have you ever had experience with a dishonest mechanic? Is there anything worse than the sinking feeling of realizing you’ve been ripped off? Or of having your car break down just days after it returns from the shop and realizing, when one of your car-savvy friends comes over, that the mechanic is at fault? Have you ever heard a mechanic say that he needs X amount of dollars to replace a part, your radiator for example, and realized months later that your radiator hasn’t been replaced? There are few feelings in the world as unpleasant as this, the feeling of being cheated, because it makes you feel guilty as well, like you should have been smarter, like you cheated yourself. The truth is, if you don’t have as much knowledge of cars as the mechanic, you’re prone to this happening to you.
#2 - The expensive mechanic. Depending on which part of town you’re in, there are some mechanics who grossly overprice their services. It’s sometimes difficult to know that a mechanic’s services are overpriced, and other times it’s just obvious. But is there any advantage to working with a mechanic whose prices are so exclusive? The short answer is, probably not. Not all expensive mechanics are good mechanics. A mechanic should demonstrate his value by the work that he does, not by how much he charges for it.
#3 - The cheap mechanic. Wait, didn’t I just say to watch out for expensive mechanics? Well, yes, but I’m not just talking about money here. A mechanic who doesn’t take pride in his job, or who isn’t fully accountable to his customers, is liable to become a cheap mechanic. Not “cheap” as in inexpensive, but “cheap” as in, cuts corners, cuts costs, does the minimum amount of work required, loses track of his jobs, and returns your vehicle in potentially worse shape than it was before. Definitely avoid the cheap mechanic.
#4 - The lazy mechanic. When your car isn’t running, your life can become very complicated very quickly. While you’re busy arranging rides, hopping on buses, and trying to keep your life from grinding to a complete halt, the last thing you want is a lazy mechanic, who has a reputation for taking extra time with his jobs. Is that time you can afford? In today’s world, the answer is pretty clear. Don’t hire a lazy mechanic.
#5 - The inexperienced mechanic. This should go without saying, but you should always avoid a mechanic who isn’t experienced. When you pull up to a garage and get ready to hand your keys over, before you do, you might want to inquire as to who is going to be working on your vehicle. Is it the owner of the garage, an experienced partner, or a high school student looking to earn a little money over the summer? While the garage might give every appearance of having experienced mechanics working for it, appearances can be deceiving. To avoid an inexperienced mechanic, simply make sure you know who will be working on your vehicle before you leave the shop.
Whew! So in the mechanic world, at least, there are a few types to avoid. Now that you know how to spot them, you might have an easier time finding the mechanic that’s right for you. But if you’re still concerned about finding great Calgary mechanics who will do the work you need at a reasonable price, worry no more. We’ve gone looking and found the best Calgary mechanic for you.
